Gums that bleed when you brush are sending you a message. The message is not "brush more gently." It's "there's bacterial buildup along my edges that I can't fight off." Healthy gums don't bleed. They sit firm against your teeth, don't pull away, and don't bleed when you floss. If yours do any of these things, you're somewhere on the spectrum of gum disease. Early stage (gingivitis) is fully reversible with a professional cleaning and better home care. Later stages (periodontitis) involve bone loss that doesn't grow back, though we can stop it progressing. The frustrating part is that gum disease is mostly painless until it's advanced. Many patients are surprised at their first deep cleaning to learn there's already bone loss. By then, the conversation shifts from prevention to maintenance. A scaling visit every six months and proper flossing at home prevents almost all of this.
